With pressure from the beauty blogging community as well as customers, M.A.C. responded with another statement today to the effect that they are donating $100,000 to a non-profit organisation to help improve the lives of women in Juarez and that it was changing the product names and Rodarte have also issued an apology.
Statement from MAC:"We understand that product names in the M•A•C Rodarte collection have offended our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We continue to listen carefully to the comments we have received and have the following plans to address concerns:
We are committed to donating $100,000 to a non-profit organization that has a proven, successful track-record helping women in need and that can directly improve the lives of women in Juarez in a meaningful way.
We are changing the product names in the M•A•C Rodarte collection. As we have done in the past, please be assured that we will communicate details regarding our progress in this matter. "
Apology from Rodarte:
"We recognize that the violence against women taking place in Juarez needs to be met with proactive action. We never intended to make light of this serious issue and we are truly sorry.
Helping to improve the conditions for women in Juarez is a priority for us and we are thankful for all the comments calling attention to the urgency of addressing this situation."
I’d like to thank everyone who has voiced their opinions over this matter and it has shown how powerful beauty bloggers are on influencing decision makers! Whilst its good that MAC have responded and are donating some money to charity, is this enough? Has this decision come too late?

ReplyDeleteWhile I think it's a definite step in the right direction that MAC is now donating some of the proceeds and changing the product names, I'm still not completely impressed. 100k is not very much to such a large company, and personally as long as they are making ANY form of profit from a collection based on human suffering I will not support it.

I've voiced my opinion on some other beauty blogs. I think the money is nice, but too little too late. Also, we need to learn that throwing money at something shouldn't make it go away and doesn't fix the problem.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts are this: 1.somebody had to come up with this idea and think it was good....why would that EVER happen in the first place in a company that is 'aware' of the issues its naming its products after. 2.throwing money at a problem is a short term solution...if this was really something they cared about, they'd bee looking at a way to help in a long term way. 3.I don't feel they're sincere in any way and I'm boycotting using/buying ALL of their products.
This was HUGE and since so many of us obviously have a voice...we shouldn't let them think they can get away with the bandaide they say their going to put over a wound that requires a tourniquete and stitches.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that bloggers can have this power, it's about time! However, yes it does seem a little too little...but let's face it, hey are not going to scrap an entire project as big as Rodarte's one...even though we wish they would.
Personally, I used to buy Mac...NOT ANYMORE. They have lost me forever. They have disgusted me. They knew very well what they were doing. Everybody knows about Juarez, this is no coindidence. They've lost me. Never buying MAC again and also non interested in Rodarte.

ReplyDeleteAll the bloggers who were involved and everyone who has kept the awareness high have been superb.
It is a shame that it has come to this and that people no longer want to buy MAC, don't forget that they have in the past done some fantastic work with Viva Glam and their HIV awareness charity.
But I really don't think that it should have got this far. If Rodarte and MAC would have released the range with the full intention of raising awareness and donating a huge if not 100% of the profits to a recognised charity. There would have been no controversy at all. a terrible shame they wasted an opportunity to spread awareness in a good way.
as i wrote in my post on the subject, $100,000 is such a small amount to MAC, they could have made a real difference to juarez and the surrounding areas and then in a few years time made the collection that they said they wanted to make about the "ethereal landscape" as hopefully it would be all it was now famous for.
